The brown bear is the most widely distributed bear in the world and can be found living in the forests and mountains of northern North America, Europe and Asia. There are many subspecies of brown bear, with the largest bears found in the islands of the Kodiak Archipelago, a group of islands south of mainland Alaska.
The brown bear’s global home range has shrunk significantly and local populations have been made extinct, but it is still listed as a least concern species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
