Animal Welfare Education Programme Launched in Thai

International animal welfare charity Wild Welfare has launched a free digital animal husbandry programme in Thai, to support wildlife caregivers across Thailand.

The unique, open-access online programme, titled “Wild About Welfare” is produced in collaboration with The Jeanne Marchig International Centre for Animal Welfare Education (JMICAWE) at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. The translation of the programme into Thai was made possible by Mandai Nature who were the majority supporter of the project. Additional support was also given by Free the Bears.

Already available in English, Japanese, Vietnamese and Bahasa Indonesia, the free, online programme now makes animal welfare education available to Thai speakers working with captive wildlife in facilities such as zoos, aquariums, animal sanctuaries and rescue centres.

Wild Welfare’s director, Simon Marsh, said: “Ensuring animal welfare resources are available in people’s native languages is vital in helping build capacity and ensure these concepts are fully understood. This allows the animal care staff to improve the care provided to the animals and thus, the animals experience improved welfare and are able to thrive, not just survive.”

Delivering bite-sized online modules on subjects such as animal behaviour, animal welfare needs and animal enrichment, the programme – which is accessible on smartphones, tablets and computers – can be taken one module at a time or as a complete course.

Designed to be used by animal carers, it provides practical learning exercises and encourages participants to really consider the species’ biology, as well as individual preferences, which helps towards making positive decisions for their welfare.

Wild Welfare has already been working in Thailand for several years, focusing on welfare evaluations, capacity building and hosting practical animal welfare training workshops for zoological facilities across the region. The enrichment workshops in particular have been met with enthusiasm by some facilities, with their animal care teams keen to invent and showcase enrichment activities for their animals, giving them more opportunities to express natural behaviours.

In addition, the charity has been collaborating with the Zoological Park Organisation of Thailand (ZPOT) since 2017 to drive forward positive welfare changes for animals under human care.

Criticism of Thai facilities can be high. Instead of condemning and shutting down conversations, we work in collaboration with captive wild animal facilities and encourage honest dialogue about animal welfare. Wild Welfare creates positive relationships which lead to welfare improvements.

Thailand is an important hotspot for biodiversity in both its landscape and its wildlife. Numerous threatened species, such as tigers and banteng are on the brink of extinction in the region. There are an estimated 100 captive wild animal facilities across Thailand and some of them can be a last lifeline for these endangered species. However, other facilities may hold animals purely for entertainment purposes, or as confiscations from the illegal wildlife trade. Species commonly kept include elephants and macaques, as well as crocodiles and various bird species.

Wild Welfare has extensive experience in identifying where there are gaps in animal welfare standards in captive wildlife facilities and has published research into the most common captive animal welfare issues. 

Simon Marsh added, “By empowering animal care staff to understand what good animal welfare looks like we can achieve our mission of ending the suffering of captive wild animals around the world. Education is the key, by offering people a way to access good quality information, encouraging discussions, and peer to peer learning, we can change long held practices or traditions without challenging cultures or beliefs.”

The charity continues to translate the “Wild About Welfare” programme into other languages to meet the need and represent the scope of project countries it is active in around the world.

เปิดตัวโปรแกรมการให้ความรู้เรื่องสวัสดิภาพสัตว์ในภาษาไทย

Wild Welfare ซึ่งเป็นมูลนิธิด้านสวัสดิภาพสัตว์ระหว่างประเทศ ได้เปิดตัวโปรแกรมดิจิทัลด้านสัตวบาลที่เข้าถึงได้ฟรีในภาษาไทยเพื่อสนับสนุนผู้ดูแลสัตว์ป่าทั่วประเทศไทย

โปรแกรมออนไลน์ที่แตกต่างนี้มีชื่อว่า “มุ่งสู่สวัสดิภาพสัตว์” ซึ่งเปิดให้ประชาชนเข้าถึงได้โดยทั่วไป และผลิตขึ้นโดยได้รับความร่วมมือจาก The Jeanne Marchig International Centre for Animal Welfare Education (JMICAWE) ที่มหาวิทยาลัยเอดินบะระ ประเทศสกอตแลนด์ คำแปลภาษาไทยของโปรแกรมนี้เกิดขึ้นได้ด้วยการสนับสนุนจาก Mandai Nature ซึ่งเป็นผู้สนับสนุนหลักของโครงการนี้ นอกจากนี้ยังได้รับการสนับสนุนเพิ่มเติมจาก Free the Bears ด้วย

Wild Welfare มีการดำเนินงานในประเทศไทยมาเป็นเวลาหลายปีแล้ว โดยเน้นที่การประเมินสวัสดิภาพ การสร้างขีดความสามารถ และการจัดเวิร์กช็อปการฝึกอบรมด้านสวัสดิภาพสัตว์ในเชิงปฏิบัติให้กับสถานประกอบการด้านสัตววิทยาทั่วภูมิภาค โดยเฉพาะเวิร์กช็อปด้านการส่งเสริมพฤติกรรมสัตว์ซึ่งได้รับการตอบสนองจากสถานประกอบการบางแห่งเป็นอย่างดีเยี่ยม และทีมดูแลสัตว์ของสถานประกอบการก็มีความกระตือรือร้นที่จะคิดค้นและแสดงกิจกรรมการส่งเสริมพฤติกรรมสำหรับสัตว์ของตน ทำให้สัตว์ได้มีโอกาสที่จะแสดงออกถึงพฤติกรรมตามธรรมชาติของมันมากขึ้น

นอกจากนี้ ทางมูลนิธิยังทำงานร่วมกับองค์การสวนสัตว์แห่งประเทศไทย ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ (อสส.) ตั้งแต่ปี 2017 เพื่อขับเคลื่อนให้เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงด้านบวกในด้านสวัสดิภาพของสัตว์ที่อยู่ภายใต้การดูแลของมนุษย์

สถานประกอบการในประเทศไทยอาจมีคำวิจารณ์มากมาย แต่แทนที่จะกล่าวโทษและตัดบทสนทนา เรามีการทำงานร่วมกับสถานประกอบการที่กักขังสัตว์ป่า และส่งเสริมให้มีการสนทนาที่จริงใจเกี่ยวกับสวัสดิภาพสัตว์ Wild Welfare สร้างความสัมพันธ์อันดี ซึ่งนำไปสู่การปรับปรุงสวัสดิภาพให้ดีขึ้น

ประเทศไทยเป็นพื้นที่ซึ่งมีความสำคัญทางด้านความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพ ทั้งในด้านภูมิทัศน์และสัตว์ป่าในประเทศ สัตว์สายพันธุ์ที่มีความเสี่ยงต่อการสูญพันธุ์หลายสายพันธุ์ เช่น เสือและวัวแดง จวนเจียนจะสูญพันธุ์แล้วในภูมิภาคนี้ คาดว่าประเทศไทยมีสถานประกอบการที่กักขังสัตว์ป่า 100 แห่งทั่วประเทศ และบางแห่งอาจเป็นสายชูชีพสายสุดท้ายสำหรับสัตว์สายพันธุ์ที่ใกล้การสูญพันธุ์เหล่านี้ อย่างไรก็ตาม สถานประกอบการอื่น ๆ อาจขังสัตว์ไว้เพียงเพื่อความบันเทิง หรือยึดมาจากการค้าสัตว์ป่าผิดกฎหมาย สายพันธุ์สัตว์ที่มักถูกกักขังไว้รวมถึงช้างและลิงวอก รวมทั้งจระเข้และนกหลายสายพันธุ์

Simon Marsh กล่าวเสริมว่า “การเพิ่มศักยภาพให้กับเจ้าหน้าที่ดูแลสัตว์เพื่อให้เข้าใจว่าสวัสดิภาพสัตว์ที่ดีดูเป็นอย่างไร จะทำให้เราสามารถบรรลุพันธกิจที่จะสิ้นสุดความทุกข์ของสัตว์ป่าในที่กักขังทั่วโลกได้ ซึ่งการให้ความรู้คือกุญแจสำคัญ และด้วยการเสนอให้ผู้คนมีวิธีที่จะเข้าถึงข้อมูลที่มีคุณภาพดี ส่งเสริมการสนทนา และการเรียนรู้ในคนกลุ่มเดียวกัน เราจะสามารถเปลี่ยนแปลงแนวทางปฏิบัติหรือธรรมเนียมที่มีมายาวนานได้โดยไม่ต้องท้าทายวัฒนธรรมหรือความเชื่อ”

ทางมูลนิธิยังคงแปลโปรแกรม “มุ่งสู่สวัสดิภาพสัตว์” เป็นภาษาอื่น ๆ อย่างต่อเนื่องเพื่อตอบสนองความต้องการ และแสดงถึงขอบเขตของประเทศที่โครงการมีการทำงานอย่างแข็งขันทั่วโลก
